Anil started his political career as the chairman of Nagpur Zilla Parishad. In 1995, he was elected to the Maharashtra State Assembly from Katol as an independent candidate. Deshmukh joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) after it was formed in 1999. When the NCP–Congress alliance came to power in Maharashtra that year, he first worked as the Minister of State for School Education, Information and Public Relations, Sports, and Youth Welfare.
