Eknath Shinde is an Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of Maharashtra, having taken office on June 30, 2022. Recently, as the term of the Maharashtra assembly ended, he resigned from his position as Chief Minister.
However, the governor asked him to stay on as a caretaker Chief Minister until a new government is formed.
Eknath Shinde Biography
Eknath Sambhaji Shinde was born on 9 February 1964 in Maharashtra. He is from Dare Village in Satara, Maharashtra, and belongs to the Maratha community. His family later moved to Thane, near Mumbai.
Shinde’s father is Sambhaji Navlu Shinde, and his mother was Gangubai Sambhaji Shinde, who passed away on April 18, 2019. He has a brother named Prakash Sambhaji Shinde, who is a councilor at Thane Municipal Corporation.
Shinde has been the Chairperson of Shiv Sena since February 2023. He is also the Leader of the House in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly since July 2022.
Educational Details
He studied up to 11th grade at Mangala High School in Thane but dropped out to help his family. In 2014, after joining the government, he resumed his education and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University in 2020.
Shinde was given an honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degree by D.Y. Patil University in Navi Mumbai on March 28, 2023. The degree was awarded to him by Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais and the university’s chancellor, Dr. Vijay Patil.

Shinde is an Indian politician who became the 20th Chief Minister of Maharashtra on June 30, 2022, after breaking away from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. His son, Dr. Shrikant Shinde, was elected as a Member of Parliament in 2014, representing the Kalyan constituency.
He won the election by defeating the NCP’s candidate, Anand Paranjape. Dr. Shrikant Shinde is an orthopedic surgeon. In the 1980s, while doing odd jobs, Eknath Shinde met Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray and Anand Dighe, the Thane District Chief of Shiv Sena.
They helped him join the party. In 1997, he ran for the Thane Municipal Corporation elections and won, becoming a Corporator. From 2001 to 2004, he served as the Leader of the House in the Thane Municipal Corporation.
In 2004, Shinde ran in the Assembly Elections from the Thane constituency and won with a large number of votes, supported by Balasaheb Thackeray. The next year, Shiv Sena made him the Thane District Head.
After the 2014 Assembly elections, Eknath Shinde was made the leader of the Shiv Sena legislative party and the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly.
In January 2019, he was appointed as the Minister for Public Works (Public Undertakings) and also given the additional responsibility of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry.
From 2004 to 2014, as the Leader of the Opposition, Eknath Shinde raised important issues like the Cluster Development scheme for old buildings in Thane and MMR, the Thane Metro, a new train station between Thane and Mulund, water shortages, coastal security, police modernization, inflation, and the state’s growing debt.
He often spoke about these topics at political rallies. In December 2019, Shiv Sena allied with the BJP-led government in Maharashtra. Eknath Shinde was made the Minister of Public Works and was also given the additional role of Chairman of the Maharashtra State Roads Development Corporation (MSRDC).
In January 2019, Eknath Shinde became the Health Minister of Maharashtra under Uddhav Thackeray. As Health Minister, he filled 890 vacancies for doctors and specialists in government hospitals, raised salaries for contract workers under the National Health Scheme, and started dialysis centers in sub-district hospitals.
He also approved 60 dispensaries under the ‘Balasaheb Thackeray Aapla Dawakhana’ scheme and helped start Mahavir Jain Hospital in Thane with the Thane Municipality and a service group called Jito.
On March 13, 2024, the nameplate outside Eknath Shinde’s office at the state secretariat in Mumbai was updated. The new nameplate now reads “Eknath Gangubai Sambhaji Shinde,” with his mother’s name mentioned before his father’s name.
