Dr. Babasaheb Pandurang Adhav, also known as Baba, is an Indian social activist and trade union leader. He is recognized for his efforts in bringing social reforms to help unorganized and underprivileged daily wage workers.

Baba was born on June 1st, 1930, in Pune, Maharashtra. His father, Pandurang, ran a lentil distribution business, but it shut down during the economic depression of 1930. Baba’s father passed away when he was just 3 months old.

He and his four siblings (one older brother and three sisters) were raised by their mother, Babutai Pandurang Adhav, in her family’s home in Nana Peth, Pune. They were supported by her brother, Bapusaheb Zende.

Educational Details 

Baba attended primary school at a public school run by the Pune Municipal Corporation and later went to Shivaji Maratha School for his higher education. In 1952, he graduated from Tarachand Ramnath Ayurveda College and began practicing medicine from his home in Nana Peth, Pune.

He is married now. Baba married Sheela Garud in 1966. Sheela worked as a nurse throughout her career and took care of their two sons, Aseem and Ambar.

Political Journey Of Baba Adhav

At the age of 12, in 1942, while still in school, Baba joined the Rashtra Seva Dal. There, he worked with social reformers in Pune like Bhai Vaidya, Pannalal Surana, and Bapu Kaldate. He was also mentored by Sane Guruji and S.M. Joshi.

Baba actively participated in the Quit India Movement and the Indian freedom struggle. Baba started his own medical clinic in Nana Peth, where he worked for 14 years before fully focusing on activism.

In 1963, he was elected as a Municipal Councilor for the Bhavani Peth area in Pune. He ran for election as part of a group called Nagarik Sanghatana. In 1968, Baba was re-elected as a Municipal Councilor and continued working for social reforms to help those facing discrimination.

He also ran for the position of Mayor but was not successful. In 1967 and 1971, Baba, as a member of the United Socialist Party led by S.M. Joshi, contested in the elections for Member of Parliament but lost both times to his Congress Party opponents.

In 2000, Baba led a movement to remove a statue of Manu, which symbolized inequality and caste discrimination, from in front of the Jaipur High Court. Thousands of people joined Baba in this march from Mahad to Jaipur, fighting for equality.

At the age of 90, Baba continued to be a leading figure in the working-class movement in India, dedicated to the values of equality and non-discrimination, which were central to the Indian freedom movement.

Adhav’s hunger strike has stirred up a lot of political tension. He is leading a movement against Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), believing that the results in Maharashtra were unfair because of them. Baba is so upset that he refuses to even drink water.

The situation became serious enough that prominent leaders like Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, and Ajit Pawar had to step in to try and convince him to end his protest.
