Early life and family
His father, Tirupathi Rao Naidu, was a rice trader, and his mother, Veera Veni, was a homemaker. Sukumar was the youngest of six siblings. When he was just six years old, Sukumar became a vegetarian for a long time after witnessing the slaughter of a rooster he loved.
He completed his schooling at Zilla Parishad High School in Razole and earned a master’s degree in mathematics. Sukumar then worked as a mathematics and physics lecturer at Aditya Junior College in Kakinada for nearly seven years. Feeling that life as a lecturer had become routine and dull, he and his junior colleague, Prakash Toleti, decided to pursue something more creative.
Sukumar’s Career Journey and Personal Life
Sukumar, along with his colleague Prakash Toleti, began his career in Telugu cinema as a writer. They initially worked on a few films, including contributing scenes for Bavagaru Bagunnara? (1998). However, due to ethical reasons, they left the project midway. With limited income from writing, Sukumar temporarily returned to teaching to earn money before resuming his work in the film industry.
He started as an assistant director for Manasichi Choodu (1998) and later worked under Editor Mohan for Kshemamga Velli Labhamga Randi (2000) and Hanuman Junction (2001). Before making his directorial debut, Sukumar also assisted director V. V. Vinayak on the film Dil (2003).
Directorial Debut and Breakthrough (2004–2011)
Sukumar made his directorial debut with Arya (2004), a film he began scripting while working on Dil. He introduced a fresh narrative style by portraying a protagonist who expresses his love at the beginning of the story, breaking the conventional trope of revealing love or obsession at the climax. With Allu Arjun in the lead role, the film became a massive hit, grossing ₹30 crore on a budget of ₹4 crore. The success of Arya made Sukumar a star director overnight, earning him the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Telugu and the Nandi Award for Best Screenplay Writer.
Sukumar then directed Jagadam (2007), a crime drama focusing on violence, starring Ram Pothineni and Isha Sahni. Despite its technical brilliance, the film received mixed reviews and failed at the box office. However, over time, it gained a cult following.
In 2009, he directed Arya 2, a follow-up to his debut, with Allu Arjun, Kajal Aggarwal, and Navdeep in lead roles. The film told the story of Arya, a psychotic orphan, and his complex relationships. While it received mixed reviews, it was one of the year’s successful Telugu films. Sukumar’s unique storytelling style earned praise from director S. S. Rajamouli, who called Sukumar “the best of the lot.”
Personal Life
Sukumar is married to Thabitha, a homemaker. They have two children, a son and a daughter. Despite his fame, Sukumar stays grounded and prioritizes his family, often describing his wife and children as his greatest support system.
