Early Life and Education
Suella Braverman was born in Harrow, Greater London, and grew up in Wembley. She is of Indian heritage, with her mother, Uma, from Mauritius, and her father, Christie Fernandes, from Kenya. Her mother was a nurse and a councillor in Brent, while her father worked for a housing association. Suella’s name is inspired by the character Sue Ellen from the TV show Dallas, but her teachers shortened it to Suella.
She attended Uxendon Manor Primary School and Heathfield School in Pinner on a partial scholarship. Later, she studied law at Queens’ College, Cambridge, where she was chairwoman of the Cambridge University Conservative Association. Braverman also lived in France for two years, where she earned a master’s degree in European and French law from Panthéon-Sorbonne University.
Legal Career
Braverman became a barrister in 2005 after being called to the bar at Middle Temple. She completed her pupillage at 2–3 Gray’s Inn Square and later worked at No5 Chambers in London, specializing in litigation, immigration, and planning law. She passed the New York bar exam in 2006 but her license was suspended in 2021.
In 2010, she was appointed to the Attorney General’s C panel of counsel, handling basic government cases. That same year, she co-founded the Africa Justice Foundation with other barristers.
