Wamiqa Gabbi was born into a family with a creative background; her father, Govardhan Gabbi, is an author who writes in Hindi and Punjabi under the pseudonym Gabbi. She is a trained Kathak dancer and began her career in Punjabi cinema. Her big break came with the film Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22, where she starred alongside Yo Yo Honey Singh and Amrinder Gill. She continued to make a name for herself with roles in Ishq Brandy and Ishq Haazir Hai opposite Diljit Dosanjh.
Wamiqa then moved to other languages, taking on her first lead role as Tanisha in Sixteen and later starring in the Telugu film Bhale Manchi Roju. She also appeared as the female lead in the Tamil film Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam (2016) and in the Malayalam film Godha alongside Tovino Thomas. In 2017, she signed on for the Tamil film Iravaakaalam, directed by Ashwin Saravanan, and played a role in the Malayalam film 9, co-starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mamta Mohandas.
