Richard Alan Rodriguez, also called Rich Rod, is an American college football coach and former player. He is currently the head coach of the West Virginia University football team, which is his second time coaching at his old school.

On Thursday, West Virginia University officially announced that they hired Rich Rodriguez, who was coaching at Jacksonville State. This marks the first time since 2007 that he is returning to coach at West Virginia.

Educational Details

Rich is from Grant Town, West Virginia. He graduated from North Marion High School in 1981, where he played four sports and was an all-state football and basketball player.

After high school, he went to West Virginia University, where he played as a defensive back in football and made 54 tackles over three seasons.

Career Journey Of Rich Rodriguez  

In 1985, He worked as a student assistant for head coach Don Nehlen while earning a degree in physical education. In 1986, he started coaching at Salem College (now Salem University) as the special teams coordinator and secondary coach.

By 1987, he became the defensive coordinator, and in 1988, at age 25, he became the head coach, making him the youngest college head coach in the country. In 1989, Rich returned to West Virginia University as a volunteer assistant coach for outside linebackers.

After that, he became the head coach at Glenville State College (now Glenville State University). In his first season in 1990, the team had a 1–7 record. The next year, they improved to 4–5–1, then 6–4.

In 1993, Rodriguez led Glenville to a 10–3 record, winning the WVIAC Championship and finishing as NAIA runners-up.

After the 1996 season, Rich left Glenville State and became the assistant coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterback coach at Tulane University from 1997 to 1998 under head coach Tommy Bowden.

In 1999, he interviewed for the head coaching job at Texas Tech but lost the position to Mike Leach. On December 7, 2006, Rich was offered the head coach position at Alabama.

However, on December 16, 2007, he told his players at West Virginia that he was leaving to become the head coach at the University of Michigan, replacing Lloyd Carr.

Rich was introduced as Michigan’s new head coach on December 17, 2007, at a press conference at the Junge Family Champions Center on the University of Michigan campus.

He started his coaching career at Michigan on August 30, 2008, with a 25–23 loss to Utah. His team finished the 2008 season with a 3–9 record, which was the worst in the school’s history.

In 2020, He worked as an off-field analyst for his friend Todd Graham at Hawaii. On January 12, 2021, he became the offensive coordinator at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

On December 11, 2024, it was reported that He would return to West Virginia University as the next head football coach, though the contract details were still being worked out.

The next day, December 12, 2024, he was officially named head coach. His contract is for five years, worth an average of $3.75 million, starting at $3.5 million, which is less than the previous coach’s salary, making him the lowest-paid head coach in the Big 12.
