He went on to study at the University of San Diego, where he became a standout pitcher for the San Diego Toreros, alongside teammates Josh Romanski and Matt Couch. In 2008, he earned West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year honors and was a finalist for the Roger Clemens Award.
The Baltimore Orioles selected Matusz as the fourth overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft. He signed with the team just before the August 15 deadline. After excelling in the minor leagues, including striking out 10 batters in his first Double-A start, he was named one of Baseball America’s top prospects in 2009 and 2010.
