Derek Scott Merrin is an American politician and a Republican. He represents the 42nd District in the Ohio House of Representatives. In 2024, he ran as the Republican candidate for Ohio’s 9th congressional district but lost to Marcy Kaptur, the current representative.

His father, Russ Merrin, was a public school teacher and pastor of Monclova Road Baptist Church for 23 years. His mother, Norma Merrin, worked as a registered nurse.

At 19, Derek was elected to the Waterville City Council in a small city of about 6,000 people. Two years later, he became the Mayor. He also worked for Ohio Auditor Dave Yost during his career.

In 2012, he was recognized as one of the “Thirty Conservatives Under Thirty” by Red Alert Politics. In 2016, when Representative Barbara Sears couldn’t run again due to term limits, Derek Merrin ran to take her place.

He competed in a three-way Republican primary against Vicki Donovan-Lyle and Kevin Haddad and won with over 45% of the vote. Sears left her position early to work for Ohio Governor John Kasich.

Since Merrin had won the Republican primary, Ohio House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger and other Republicans appointed him to finish Sears’ term.

In 2022, Derek ran for Speaker of the Ohio House but lost to Jason Stephens. Stephens won with support from both parties, getting 54 votes, while Merrin received 43 votes.
