Greg Gumbel was born on May 3, 1946, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was 78 years old when he passed away. He was the oldest child of Rhea Alice and Richard Dunbar Gumbel, who was a judge.

Gumbel grew up on the South Side of Chicago and was raised in the Catholic faith. Greg had two sisters, Renee and Rhonda, and a younger brother named Bryant, who also became a television broadcaster.

In 1973, Greg’s brother Bryant, who was working as a sportscaster at KNBC in Los Angeles, told him that WMAQ-TV in Chicago was looking for a sports announcer. Before becoming famous at CBS, Greg Gumbel worked for MSG, ESPN, and WFAN radio in New York City.

At ESPN, he hosted *SportsCenter* and did play-by-play for early NBA games. At MSG, he was a backup announcer for Marv Albert on New York Knicks broadcasts and also covered college basketball.

Greg hosted the first-morning show on radio station WFAN. He started working at CBS in 1988 as a part-time NFL announcer. In 1989, he began announcing college basketball. From 1990 to 1993, he hosted *The NFL Today* with Terry Bradshaw.

Gumbel also covered Major League Baseball, and college football, and in 1999, he anchored CBS’ coverage of the Daytona 500 and Pepsi 400.

Greg was the main anchor for CBS’ coverage of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, and co-anchored the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France.

After CBS lost its NFL and Major League Baseball broadcasting rights, Gumbel joined NBC in 1994. His last assignment at CBS was calling the College World Series.

At the end of the 2005 NFL season, Greg was replaced by James Brown as the host of *The NFL Today*. From 2014 to 2019, Gumbel worked as part of the #3 announcing team with Trent Green.

For the 2018 NFL season, he worked alongside Green and Bruce Arians in a three-person booth. On March 15, 2023, CBS Sports renewed its contract with Greg Gumbel, letting him keep hosting college basketball while reducing his work with the NFL.
