Family Background

His father’s name is Rajnikanth, and he is an ear, nose, and throat Doctor. Along with this, his mother is also a Doctor named Padma, a microbiologist. He belongs to a Telugu family, Gukesh started playing chess at the age of 7 years and used to rehearse for an hour 3 days a week. After ingraining his chess masters, he started participating in competitive tournaments on weekends.

Educational Background

He even stopped going to school regularly after class 4th to focus on chess. However, it was a challenging decision to take. His mother thanked his Velammal Vidyalaya School in Chennai for being one of his biggest supports.

He did his schooling in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He did his schooling at Velammal Vidyalaya, Chennai. He also took chess training along with his studies. He trained under chess coaches in Chennai and improved his chess skills.

FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 Latest News

As per the latest updates, Gukesh Dommaraju won the 2024 World Chess Championship by defeating China’s Ding Liren in the 14th round. By winning this contest played in Singapore at the age of just 18, he became the world’s most youthful chess champion. After winning this competition he received a 2.5 Million USD Prize.

He has accepted several awards and recognitions, like as the Arjuna Award, the National Child Award, and the Kalaimamani Award from the Tamil Nadu Government.

In 2015, he won his 1st prize in the Under-9 category of the Asian School Chess Championship.

In 2018, he won the World Youth Chess Championship in the Under-12 category.

At the young age of 12, Gukesh Dommaraju won 5 gold medals in the 2018 Asian Youth Chess Championship in the U-12 Individual Rapid and Blitz, U-12 Team Rapid and Blitz, and U-12 Individual Classical formats.

Gukesh is the youngest chess player to win the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 and become a world champion. Not only this, he is the second Indian to win this title.
