After graduating from NYU Film School, Jeff Baena moved to Los Angeles to begin his career in the film industry. He started as a production assistant for Robert Zemeckis, working on several projects.
Later, Baena worked as an assistant editor for writer-director David O. Russell. During their year-and-a-half collaboration, Baena suffered an eye injury in a minor car accident. To lift his spirits during recovery, Russell brainstormed story ideas with him, leading to their collaboration on four scripts. One of these scripts was I Heart Huckabees, which Russell directed in 2004.
Baena then shifted his focus to writing and began developing Life After Beth, a zombie comedy that became his directorial debut. Initially, Baena planned to direct Joshy first, but due to scheduling conflicts with actor Adam Pally, he decided to focus on Life After Beth, a script he started writing in 2003.
In 2017, Baena released The Little Hours, a comedy featuring Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Kate Micucci, Aubrey Plaza, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, and several cameos.
In 2020, Baena co-wrote Horse Girl with Alison Brie, who also starred in the film. The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival that year, further showcasing his talent for unique storytelling.
