Career Journey Of Joan Plowright

Joan made her stage debut in Croydon in 1948 and later performed in London in 1954. In 1956, she joined the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre, where she played Margery Pinchwife in The Country Wife.

Plowright studied at the Old Vic Theatre School and later acted at the Royal National Theatre, where she met Sir Laurence Olivier. She performed with him in the play The Entertainer on the West End in 1957 and on Broadway in 1958.

Joan made her film debut in a small, uncredited role in Moby Dick (1956). She won the Tony Award for Best Actress for her role in A Taste of Honey (1961).

She also received the Laurence Olivier Award for her performance in Filumena (1978). Plowright was nominated for a BAFTA for her roles in The Entertainer (1960) and Equus (1977).

She retired from acting in 2014 due to macular degeneration. Her final filmed appearance was in the documentary Nothing Like a Dame in 2018.
