Career Journey Of Karen Bass
In the 1980s, Karen worked as a physician assistant in emergency medicine and taught at USC’s Keck School of Medicine. Later in the decade, she helped start an organization called Community Coalition with other local community leaders.
In 2004, Karen was elected to represent California’s 47th Assembly District. She was the only African-American woman in the state legislature at the time. She was reelected in 2006 and 2008 but had to step down after reaching her term limit.
Karen became Assembly Speaker during a tough economic time and helped negotiate a deal to fix most of a $42 billion budget gap. In 2010, when Congresswoman Diane Watson retired, she encouraged Bass to run for her seat.
