Kirby Smart Comments on Notre Dame’s 4th Quarter Trick Play

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman surprised Georgia’s Kirby Smart with a clever trick play during the 4th quarter of the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, effectively ending Georgia’s comeback hopes.

In the post-game interview, Smart expressed frustration over the play, where Notre Dame substituted all 11 players on and off the field. He claimed SEC officials had previously told him such a move was illegal. However, community notes clarified that the play was legal because the ball hadn’t been set or touched when the substitutions occurred.

Despite being a two-time national championship-winning coach, Smart admitted that Freeman outmaneuvered him in this critical moment.
