In 2002, at the age of 15 years and 1 month, Humpy became the youngest woman ever to earn the title of Grandmaster, a record later surpassed by Hou Yifan. She has won gold medals at the Olympiad, Asian Games, and Asian Championship, and is also the first female grandmaster from India.

In October 2007, Humpy became the second female player, after Judit Polgár, to surpass a 2600 Elo rating, with a rating of 2606. Humpy’s dedication led her to achieve the Grandmaster title in 2002 and make history as the youngest woman to do so at that time.

Koneru Humpy Wins FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship Again

Koneru Humpy won the FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship for the second time in 2024, having previously won in 2019. With this victory, she became the first Indian player to win two World Rapid Chess titles. This was also her fourth time finishing in the top three of the event.

Humpy capped off a remarkable year for Indian chess, defeating Irene Sukandar from Indonesia in the final to take the title. Her victory came shortly after D. Gukesh made history by becoming the youngest-ever chess World Champion.

Humpy is only the second woman to win multiple World Rapid Championships, after China’s Ju Wenjun. Her achievement highlights her continued dominance in the world of chess.
