Indian shooter Manu Bhaker, a double Olympic medalist, and chess champion D Gukesh are among four athletes chosen for the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honor. The awards will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu on January 17 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

Manu Bhaker was born on February 18, 2002, in Goria village, Jhajjar district, Haryana, into a family passionate about education and sports. Her father, Ram Kishan Bhaker, is a chief engineer in the Merchant Navy, and her mother, Sumedha Bhaker, a former school principal, has a master’s degree in Sanskrit.

Manu studied at Universal Higher Senior Secondary School in her village, founded by her grandfather. She excelled in various sports like tennis, boxing, skating, and martial arts before focusing on shooting at 14. Her father invested ₹1.5 lakh to support her training. Manu later graduated in Political Science from Lady Shri Ram College, New Delhi, in 2021 and is pursuing a master’s in Public Administration at DAV College, Chandigarh.

Beginnings (2016–2020)

Manu started training in 2016 and achieved her first big win in 2017, earning a silver medal at the Asian Junior Championships and nine golds at the National Games. In 2018, she won gold at the ISSF World Cup in Mexico and the Commonwealth Games, where she set a new record. She also became the first Indian shooter to win gold at the Youth Olympics in 2018.
