Veteran Indian cricketer Mayank Agarwal played a crucial knock of 91 runs for Karnataka on Day 1 of their Ranji Trophy 2024/25 match against Haryana at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

With this innings, he reached a significant milestone in First-Class cricket.

Mayank built key partnerships, adding 45 runs with KV Aneesh and 44 runs with KL Rahul. Later, he put together another 62-run stand with Devdutt Padikkal.

Mayank Anurag Agarwal (born 16 February 1991) is an Indian cricketer who plays as a right-handed opening batsman. He is the captain of Karnataka in domestic cricket across all formats. Mayank made his international debut for India on 26 December 2018 against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). In the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for ₹8.5 crore. He is 5 feet 9 inches (175 cm) tall and weighs around 76 kg.

Early Life and Career

Mayank Agarwal was born on 16 February 1991 in Bangalore. His father, Anurag Agarwal, is the CEO of Natural Remedies, a healthcare company worth $35 million.

He studied at Bishop Cotton Boys’ School and later attended Jain University in Bangalore, where he played cricket alongside K.L. Rahul and Karun Nair.

Mayank gained recognition through his impressive performances in the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy (2008-09) and the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he was India’s top run-scorer. In 2010, he was named the Man of the Series in the Karnataka Premier League.

International Career

In September 2018, Mayank Agarwal was selected in India’s Test squad for the series against the West Indies but did not get a chance to play. In December 2018, he was called up for India’s Test series against Australia after Prithvi Shaw was ruled out due to an ankle injury.

Mayank made his Test debut on 26 December 2018 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), scoring 76 runs in his first innings. This was the highest score by an Indian cricketer on Test debut in Australia, surpassing Dattu Phadkar’s 51 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in 1947. He also played in the fourth Test and finished the series with 195 runs.

In July 2019, he was added to India’s squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup as a replacement for Vijay Shankar, who was ruled out due to a toe injury.

Personal Life

Mayank practices Vipassanā meditation, a technique he learned from his father, Anurag Agarwal. He is also inspired by Joseph Murphy’s book The Power of the Subconscious Mind.

In January 2018, Mayank got engaged to Aashita Sood, Praveen Sood’s daughter, the current Head of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The couple got married on 6 June 2018 and welcomed their first child, a baby boy, on 8 December 2022.

Health Incident

On 30 January 2024, Mayank Agarwal was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at ILS Hospitals in Agartala after experiencing severe stomach pain and a burning sensation in his throat and mouth.

This happened after he mistakenly drank from a bottle that he thought contained water but actually had acid with poisonous contaminants while traveling on an IndiGo flight. He vomited inside the aircraft and was immediately taken to the hospital. Fortunately, doctors later confirmed that he was stable and out of immediate danger.
