Peter Yarrow was an American singer and songwriter best known as part of the 1960s folk music group Peter, Paul, and Mary. He and Lenny Lipton helped write one of their most famous songs, Puff, the Magic Dragon. He died on 7 January 2025 at the age of 86.

Peter Yarrow was born in Manhattan, New York City, U.S., on May 31, 1938. He passed away from bladder cancer on January 7, 2025, at his apartment on the Upper West Side. He was 86 years old. His parents were Vera Wisebrode and Bernard Yarrow.

They were educated Jewish immigrants from Ukraine. Their families had moved to Providence, Rhode Island. Peter Yarrow’s father, Bernard (1899–1973), studied at universities in Kraków and Odesa before moving to the U.S. in 1922 at age 23.

His mother, Vera (1904–1991), came to America as a child and later became a speech and drama teacher in New York. Bernard and Vera divorced in 1943 when Peter was five, and Vera later married Harold Wisebrode.

Career Journey Of Peter Yarrow  

Peter started singing in public during his final year at Cornell University while taking a popular American Folk Literature course called “Romp-n-Stomp.” In early 1962, Peter, Paul, and Mary released their song “Lemon Tree” as a single.

They later released If I Had a Hammer, a song by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays. In June 1963, they put out a single Blowin’ in the Wind, written by Bob Dylan, who was not very well known at the time.

Peter often performed with his daughter, Bethany, and cellist Rufus Cappadocia in a trio called Peter, Bethany, and Rufus. They released a CD called Puff & Other Family Classics.

In 2015, Peter played a leftist intellectual named Ira Mandelstam in the movie While We’re Young.

On October 3, 2011, He, along with his son and daughter, performed at Zuccotti Park during the Occupy Wall Street protests, singing songs like We Shall Not Be Moved and a version of Puff the Magic Dragon.
