She then joined the University of Kentucky’s swim team, where she earned a spot on the All-SEC Freshman Team in 2019, and was also named to the All-SEC Second Team in both 2019 and 2020.

Riley graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2022 with a degree in health sciences. Initially, she planned to become a dentist.

She also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2021. In 2022, Riley was recognized as the Southeastern Conference Women’s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Riley was invited to try out for the 2024 Olympic qualification event in 2021, but she didn’t qualify for the main event. In April 2022, she decided to retire from competitive swimming.

She was a 12-time NCAA All-American and swam for the University of Kentucky’s team. After her swimming career, she retired from competition and shifted her focus to political activism.

She has spoken out against allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sports. In April 2022, she lobbied her state representatives to pass a law banning transgender women from participating in women’s sports.

In March 2023, she was invited to speak at a Texas Senate committee to support a law that would prevent transgender college athletes from competing in sports based on their gender identity.

In April 2023, She visited San Francisco State University to speak at a Turning Point USA student event, where she talked about her campaign against transgender athletes in women’s sports.

In November 2023, she confirmed that she was working with FIDE to stop transgender women from playing in women’s chess. This led to criticism from PinkNews, which disagreed with her claim that trans women have an advantage in chess.

In March 2024, She was one of sixteen female student-athletes who filed a lawsuit against the NCAA over the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.

Then, in August 2024, she announced the opening of the “Riley Gaines Center” at the Leadership Institute in Arlington, Virginia.
