Tania Sachdev, born on 20 August 1986, is an Indian chess player who holds the FIDE titles of International Master (IM) and Woman Grandmaster (WGM). She has won the Indian Women’s Chess Championship twice, in 2006 and 2007, and the Asian Women’s Chess Championship in 2007. Tania is also a three-time Commonwealth Women’s Chess Champion, winning the title in 2016, 2018, and 2019. Apart from competing, she works as a chess presenter and commentator.

Tania is 5 feet 6 inches (167 cm) tall and weighs around 55 kg.

Early Life and Achievements

Tania Sachdev was born in Delhi and learned chess at the age of six, introduced to the game by her mother, Anju. With her parents’ support, she received professional training and achieved her first international title at the age of eight. She was coached by K.C. Joshi during her early years. As a child, Tania won several tournaments, including the Under-12 Indian Championship, the Asian U14 Girls’ Championship in 2000, and a bronze medal in the Girls U12 division at the 1998 World Youth Chess Championships. In 2002, she won the Asian Junior Girls Championship held in Marawila.

National and International Recognition

In 2005, Tania became the eighth Indian player to achieve the Woman Grandmaster title. She won the National Women’s Premier Chess Championship in 2006 and 2007. In 2007, she also secured victory at the Women’s Asian Chess Championship in Tehran, scoring 6½ points in nine rounds. For her achievements, she was honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2009.

In 2016, Tania won the best woman’s prize at the Reykjavik Open and claimed the Commonwealth Women’s Champion title in Kalutara. She continued her winning streak, defending her Commonwealth title in 2019.

Contributions to Team India

Tania has represented India in several prestigious chess competitions:

  • Women’s Chess Olympiad: Played since 2008, winning multiple medals.
  • Women’s World Team Chess Championship: Competed in 2009 and 2011.
  • Women’s Asian Team Chess Championship: Active since 2003, winning four team silver medals (2008, 2009, 2012, and 2014) and four individual medals (three silver and one bronze).
  • Asian Games: Represented India in 2006.
