In 2012, she represented India at the Poetry Parnassus in London. She has received several honors, including the Eric Gregory Award and the All-India Poetry Competition prize. Her first book, Countries of the Body, won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection in 2006. Her poetry collection, Girls Are Coming Out of the Woods, was shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award and a Firecracker Award.

Early Life and Education

Tishani Doshi was born in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India, to a Welsh mother and a Gujarati father. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Queens University of Charlotte in the United States and later completed a master’s degree in creative writing at Johns Hopkins University.

Career

Tishani Doshi is a freelance writer and journalist who has collaborated with renowned choreographer Chandralekha. Her short story “Lady Cassandra, Spartacus and the Dancing Man” was published in The Drawbridge journal in 2007. She has also published poetry collections such as Everything Begins Elsewhere (2012 in the UK) and (2013 in the US).
