Cameron started his college football career at the University of the Incarnate Word. He became the team’s starting quarterback as a freshman, but his first season was delayed until the spring because of COVID-19.

In the shortened 2020–21 season, Cameron played six games and threw for 2,260 yards and 24 touchdowns, the most in FCS, with only four interceptions. He also ran for two touchdowns and won the Jerry Rice Award as the best freshman in FCS football.

Ward transferred to Washington State on January 10, 2022. He joined the school in his sophomore year and was named the starting quarterback for the 2022 season after spring practices.

After the 2023 season, Ward first declared for the 2024 NFL Draft but later chose to transfer to Miami instead. He announced his decision on January 13, 2024.

In the 2024 season, Ward led Miami to a 10-2 record, with one of the losses being a close 42-38 game against Syracuse in the final week.
