A member of the Republican Party, Kathryn worked as Chief Deputy Supervisor and Chief of Staff for former Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich before taking office. She is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs approximately 140 pounds.

Kathryn Barger started her government career in 1988 as an intern for Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and became his Chief of Staff by 2001. She has served on the Board of Supervisors since 2016, representing the 5th District, which is the largest in Los Angeles County, covering 2,785 square miles and including 20 cities and 83 unincorporated areas.

Barger has focused on supporting veterans, foster children, mental health improvements, homelessness solutions, and public safety. She co-authored motions to modernize mental health care, address homelessness, and create the Blue Ribbon Commission on Public Safety.

In 2017, she opposed eliminating legal service fees for public defenders and a business registration program. Barger became the Board Chair in 2019 and led during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Barger, was appointed to the Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service by former President Donald Trump in 2019. Her late father, Richard D. Barger, served as California Insurance Commissioner from 1968 to 1972, an appointment by then-Governor Ronald Reagan.
